In the Bleak Midwinter (I'll Give You My Love)

about

I’m back with another Christmas single. It appears to be a ‘thing’ for me now, after releasing Walking in the Air in 2021, the It’s Christmas! 4 track EP in 2022.

For 2023 I present to you my rework of Christina Rossetti’s poem and Gustav Holst’s musical arrangement of In the Bleak Midwinter.

My music has always had an element of darkness to it, and the title of this song is what inspired me to delve deeper. As such it starts out in my signature cold, electro dance style with gently sung and spoken words. As the song progresses it becomes warmer and with a slight alteration to the original poem on the final line “If I were an angel, I’d bring you a dove. But all I can give this Christmas, is give you my love” it reminds us to be kind to everyone and not to take our friends and family for granted. In a divided world and a cost of living crisis, love is something that can unite us all and costs nothing.

The video I have created for this song is deeply personal to me as it is taken from my family’s old cine films. It depicts my great grandparents (whom I never met) and grandparents celebrating Christmas with my mum and dad in the late 70’s and early 80’s. I also make a cameo appearance as a one year old towards the end of the video with my brother and grandmother ‘Nanna Butt Butts’ who passed when I was 9 years old.

As a teenager I remember my parents projecting the original 8mm films on our dining room wall every Christmas Day after dinner. The films were converted to digital in the early 00’s so for me this is my tribute to my own family.

lyrics

In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron
Water like a stone
Snow had fallen, snow on snow
Snow on snow
In the bleak mid-winter long ago

In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron
Water like a stone
Snow had fallen, snow on snow
Snow on snow
In the bleak mid-winter long ago

In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made main
Earth stood hard as iron
Water like a stone

Enough for him, whom cherubim
Worship night and day
A breastful of milk
And a mangerful of hay
Enough for him, whom angels
Fall down before
The ox and ass and camel which adore
Which adore

In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron
Water like a stone
Snow had fallen, snow on snow
Snow on snow
In the bleak mid-winter long ago

What can I give you?
Poor as I am
If I were a shepherd
I'd bring a lamb
If I were an angel,
I'd bring you a dove
But all I can give this Christmas
Is give you my love

I'll give you my love

This Christmas
I'll give you my love

This Christmas
I'll give you my love

This Christmas
I'll give you my love
